The 40th anniversary of Danny Sullivan’s iconic “Spin and Win” victory in the 1985 Indianapolis 500 will be celebrated through the design of the Bronze and Silver badges for this year’s edition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
Sullivan did a 360-degree spin in the south chute between Turns 1 and 2 in the No. 5 Miller American March/Cosworth fielded by Team Penske immediately after passing Mario Andretti for the lead on Lap 120. Sullivan’s car made no contact with the walls in an impeccable display of car control, and he rallied to pass Andretti again for the lead on Lap 140 and was out front the rest of the way in one of the most improbable victories in the storied history of the race.
This year’s badges feature Sullivan’s sideways car with smoke billowing from the tires, a keepsake for all Indianapolis 500 enthusiasts.
A Bronze Badge provides gate admission and garage area access during public gate hours on practice days for the Sonsio Grand Prix (May 9) and Indianapolis 500 presented by Gainbridge (May 13-19, 23-24). Bronze Badge holders must be at least 18 years old.
Bronze Badge holders also can participate in a pre-race grid walk before the Sonsio Grand Prix on Saturday, May 10, but they must have a Race Day ticket for entrance to IMS that day.
Silver Badge holders enjoy all the access of a Bronze Badge, plus pit lane access on practice days.
