Note: The #MyBrickyard series features longtime ticket holders for the Brickyard 400, as they discuss what they enjoy about the NASCAR weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and why it has become an annual tradition for them. Today’s fifth and final installment features Kevin Grannan of Albuquerque, New Mexico, who has bought tickets for all 24 Brickyard 400 races. Kevin is an Indianapolis native who has lived in Texas and New Mexico since his teens but still has attended every NASCAR weekend at IMS.
This is Kevin’s account of why he loves the NASCAR weekend at IMS, which is July 21-23 this year for the Brantley Gilbert Big Machine Brickyard 400 and the Lilly Diabetes 250: Q: Kevin, have you had tickets for all 24 Brickyard 400s? A: That’s right. This is our 24th year. Q: You live in New Mexico. What is your connection to Indianapolis? A: I grew up in Indianapolis. My mom and dad still live here, and we come to the race. My dad comes to the race. He comes every year. It’s been me and my dad, and my wife and nephews. It’s been all kinds of people over the years that have gone with us. We’re going with six this year. Q: Have you had the same seats all 24 years? A: We moved one time from the original seats to Turn 1. We decided to keep those seats. They’re good ones. We’re down in Stand E. Q: Do you have any pre-race rituals with your group? A: We try to park on Race Day morning over there on 16th Street, sit around and have breakfast. I take my camper. We sit around and have breakfast and shop and do those things, and then we go into the track a couple of hours before the green flag. Q: What do you love the most about the Brickyard? You’re traveling a long way; there are NASCAR races closer to you in New Mexico. A: It’s IMS – you can’t beat it. It’s just a family tradition to keep doing it. Q: Do you have a favorite driver? A: I used to root for Mark Martin, and then he retired. Now I’m a Martin Truex Jr. fan.
