Brickyard 400
#MyBrickyard: Jack Obringer, Fairfield, Connecticut

Note: The #MyBrickyard series features longtime ticket holders for the Brickyard 400, as they discuss what they enjoy about the NASCAR weekend at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and why it has become an annual tradition for them. Some installments will feature first-person accounts; others will be in question-and-answer format.

Today’s fourth installment features Jack Obringer of Fairfield, Connecticut, who has bought tickets for all 23 previous Brickyard 400 races. Jack’s story is unique because he attended the first 10 races with family and friends as a fan. Then he started working for ESPN and attended the race to work while giving his tickets to family and friends.

This is Jack’s account of why he loves the NASCAR weekend at IMS, which is July 21-23 this year for the Brantley Gilbert Big Machine Brickyard 400 and the Lilly Diabetes 250:

Q: Jack, have you attended all 23 Brickyard 400s? If not, how many?

A: I personally buy them each year and went to the first 10 or so as a fan. Then I was hired by ESPN and was actually responsible for our NASCAR coverage on “SportsCenter” and subsequently oversaw “NASCAR Now.” At that point I gave them to my two oldest kids alternating years. They would take friends.

Q: Did you get a chance to see your family and friends at the race when you work the race for ESPN?

A: I would go sit with them for a few laps until work called.

Q: Will you be at the race this year?

A: This year my son gets them as I cannot attend. The same son who was actually at the first race in '94 – in the womb! In fact, my wife and I took my best friend and his wife, who was also pregnant. So there were actually six humans sitting in those four seats for the inaugural race.

Q: Have you been in the same seats since the inaugural race in 1994?

A: Yes. Section 79, Row BB, Seats 7-10. Randomly assigned and loved from day one.

Q: What do you love about your seats?

A: You can see more than half the track when you look back over the rail, so I never wanted to change. I have every intention of keeping them and going to the track until the end of my days.
